Bacterial vaginosis (BV), is a bacterial infection occurring within the vagina. It’s thought that at least 1 in 3 females will develop bv at some point during their life. It’s twice as common as thrush and is the most common infection for females of childbearing age.

In the USA studies have shown that about 29% of women are affected by bacterial vaginosis. It is found in about 16% of women who are pregnant and in roughly 60% of women who have a sexually transmitted disease.

About 85% of females that have a BV infection have no symptoms. Odor and vaginal discharge are the main symptoms when they occur. Usually there are no more symptoms. The amount of discharge from the vagina considered to be normal varies from woman to woman. Any abnormal discharge from the vagina should be investigated by a doctor.

A common cause of BV is an imbalance of bad and good bacteria, starting with an imbalance of pH in the vagina. The solution to this problem is to ensure the pH balance doesn’t become imbalanced. A few of the most common causes of bacterial vaginosis are changing sex partners, anemia, menopause, washing too much, wearing thongs and using perfumed soaps or deodorants around the vagina.

With vaginal discharge some women may experience a disagreeable fishy odor. This discharge is usually thin and is gray to white in color, which is more noticeable after sex.

BV can clear up by itself without the use of antibiotics, but some women who want to ease their symptoms have found a good home remedy for BV can be much better than over the counter treatments, which are only a short term fix. There are a number of natural home remedies that can be used to treat a bacterial vaginosis infection such as douching with a solution of water and boric acid.
