It wasn’t until late last century that most Westerners found out that karate weapons actually existed, and it was at that point that a great misconception about the various styles of martial arts was replaced with an even deeper fascination with the sport. The martial arts are still highly rooted in training the body to be a strong weapon on its own, and the role of the various staffs and blades only furthers that core agenda on which the entire sport was founded.

Many fighters like to be overly critical of the use and relevance of these highly unusual weapons, disregarding their effectiveness in combat and often deeming them impractical. The core principle in most martial arts classes is the concept that are bodies must be highly trained and our minds disciplined, and this calls for great agility and super fast reflexes. Even though you may be much better off to grab a sword or just use your hands than to fool with a pair of nunchaku or a triple jointed staff in a heated fight, actually training and sparring with such things will help you develop an amazing fighting physique.

Like anything else you can think of, these items had to come from somewhere, and where they came from is actually a bit shocking to many people. Before these things turned into the exotic and amazing looking weapons that you are seeing today, they were actually farm tools that were used to tend to the crops and fields of the time.

They were not Created by ancient martial arts heroes who desired new tools to perfect their fighting style; they were just tools that were modified by farmers who needed something to defend their selves with. Each weapon had its own intent, both on the battlefield and out in the crop fields, whether they were used in planting seeds, flipping the dirt, or grinding up fresh grain for use in making food and medicines. A lot of these folks were used to being attacked frequently, and after they honed their skills with these tools, they could finally defend their selves.

Today we have more practical ways of protecting ourselves, and karate weapons are almost never used outside of a martial arts class or a Hollywood studio. In spite of what people think, these old farming tools still serve their purpose and are also a lot of fun to watch.
