Personal assistant jobs have gone through many changes over the past few decades. At first there were really only celebrity assistants and PAs for presidents and other people in top management positions. Now, many middle managers have a personal assistant working for them, and the job has grown even more technology-minded with the creation of virtual assistants.

Typical personal assistant positions are certainly still available, however, an increasing number of firms are taking advantage of the virtual assistance option. This isn’t a software program that is able to run certain programs automatically. A virtual worker is somebody who performs the many normal responsibilities of a personal assistant via telecommuting. Hiring a virtual assistant might be a cheap way to fill those openings that your company may have available, but make sure that this individual can at least commute to your office for the odd face-to-face meeting or to help out with certain tasks that require the PA to be physically present. Thinking long-term means that hiring someone who lives in the city where your office is located may be wiser than saving a few dollars initially by hiring someone who lives in another country.

Personal assistant jobs are just another one of many different careers out there that have radically changed as a result of technology. Almost all jobs have had their duties altered at least somewhat due to advances in technology, but with the creation of virtual assistants, it is possible that traditional Pas will become as rare as when they first appeared. There may come a time when only celebrities and presidents once again will be able to afford having an assistant who is physically present in the office and by their side.
