A Mechanical watch uses mechanical energy to work effectively. Mechanical energy is a type of energy that affects kinetic energy, which is imitative from non-electronic means. Mechanical watch mechanism works by measuring the passageway of time. Mechanical watches are obtainable in a broad variety of designs and with dissimilar characteristics nowadays. This watch was completed in Europe for the first time in the year 1600 A.D.

The mechanical watch has two arms for viewing the time. The internal system of the watch has a mainspring which makes the arms go in motion. The mainspring, when in condensed type, stores the energy, and steadily and episodically, releases the energy to make the equilibrium wheel move about. This equilibrium wheel starts oscillating due to the energy abounding and transmits periodic impulse. This periodic impulse divides and “ticks” to show the time in hour and minutes.

A mechanical watch may not be accurate, however, it looks great and most of the people use it. These watches tend to be very expensive as they are, preferably, worn as a fashion watch. Previously, these watches were just a time telling machine. However, with the passage of time, due to different innovations in them, they have become a very sophisticated part of possession.

There are quite a few technological functions performed by the mechanical watches these days. The most well-liked technological functions of mechanical watches are date indications, dual times, phases of moon, world time, chronographs and power reserves etc. A number of of its technological functions are discussed here in detail:

1. Automatic winding: It is also known as self winding. The watch by itself winds to the fresh time, using the natural motions, when worn over the wrist. The mainspring moves mechanically, and one does not require to modify the time again and again.

2. Calendar is another function that is now present in the mechanical watches. The calendar in the watch shows the month, date and year. It is an automatic function and the date changes automatically after twenty four hours. But, some of the mechanical watches cannot measure the length of the month, and one has to set the date, especially if it is a leap year. So, after every four years, one needs to reset the date on a mechanical watch.

3. Chronograph: It can be called a personalized appearance of stop watch. It performs all the utility of a stop watch, by measuring diminutive intervals of time precisely; but, it also shows the calculated time in other larger and smaller units.

Most of the mechanical watches have a function of alarm clock as well. There is a small ring or buzzer attached to the watch that can be set on or off, so now you do not need to carry an alarm clock with you everywhere.

These watches include the feature of moon phases, which allow you to see the different phases of the moon, according to the day of the month and year.

6. Another technical function now performed by the mechanical watches is the wind indicator. This is shown by the watch by measuring the energy left in the main spring.

7. Voice Function: a number of the sumptuousness mechanical watches have this characteristic that they talk and tell you the time just on the push of a key.
