A person’s primary goal in affiliate marketing is to make money online. With so many companies now offering affiliate programs and products to promote it can be hard deciding where you want to focus your hard work for the best return.

A new merchant is often selected by affiliate programs as the featured product to promote. This is often just the merchant paying the program an additional fee and does not mean the product or merchant is sound and should certainly not be the deciding factor of what it is you plan on promoting.

Some programs make all stats on a product available to see. This includes conversions, returns, estimated earning per click. While other programs give you no data other than a merchant’s website.

If you are only provided with partial stats such as conversion rate and it happens to be very high it is only one piece of the puzzle. If that high converting product is not what it claims to be and has an 80% return rate the affiliate has now wasted valuable time and possibly money.

An easy check on the company is to input their name into the Better Business Bureau and see if any and what claims have been made against them. Although coming back clean doesn’t necessarily mean they are something you want to promote. If you have access to other affiliates that you have a good working relationship with it is wise to ask or check any affiliate forums if available.

You should look at the site as the consumer sees it. Look for the red flags such as promises of money back guarantees but find that there really is no way to make contact.

Other things to look for are if they have a contact page to see if it really works or if you get an error. A consumer typically never checks these unless it is needed after the purchase and by then it is too late.

If you do not see any red flags then see what types of affiliate tools they have available. It is helpful when they have ready to go banners, tracking tools, and some even access to a mentor if you would like tips on what methods are converting best.

If their affiliate tools are spam mail that misrepresents the product or anything that comes off as blatantly unethical be sure to walk away. There is no reason to think that they would not cheat the affiliate out of a portion if not all of their commissions which there are many ways of doing so.

Most merchants are great and understand their affiliates are the strongest asset they have. However, running across the rare company that does take advantage of you will leave a lasting impression. With a little checking on the merchant and product you can avoid any bad apples and get the fantastic feeling you get when you successfully make money online by all of your planning, hard work and endorsing good quality products.
