The death of the North Korean leader came as a surprise to many in and outside of the People’s Republic. From reading different articles it has become my understanding that the death of the leader was kept secret for a little while. I have yet to learn about flag code guidelines that are enforced and maintained in the Korean Democratic People’s Republic It is likely that the Korean national flag is hoisted half-staff from North Korean flag poles.

North Korea has seen better times, especially in terms of government and politics. Towards the end of the 14th century the “Yi dynasty” was established. The Yi dynasty lasted years, decades and centuries, till the beginning of the 1900′s. A few hundred years ago, China conquered Korea and established their rule. Before the division of north and south, Korea enjoyed great trading relationships with nations in the west.

China ends up recognizing the country’s independence towards the end of the 1800′s. Some decades later, the Soviets end up occupying the northern part of Korea, whereas the U.S.A. the southern part. The founding of the People’s Republic of Korea did not happen till ’48, about 3 years before the start of the Korean War, which lasted nearly 3 years!

This ensign is hoisted patriotically on North Korean flagpoles. The design of the flag was made in ’48, in the same year the People’s Republic. The North Korean flag has a similar use of colors in comparison to the South Korean flag, yet a very different design and use of elements however. The design features a number of horizontal stripes, some wider than others. The horizontal stripe in the center is red. On top of the red stripe a white circle is shown, with in the middle of the circle a red star.

The two powers tried to rule the whole of the Korean territory, which led to an increase in escalation of conflicts near and around the Korean border. North Korea ended up invading the South. This war resulted in more than 2 million people killed, which included both civilians and military personnel.

The 2 Koreas have experienced decreased and increased challenges since the start of the Korean War. 1 war fought in history is now referred to as the “flagpole war.” For years the two nations would go back and forth in achieving new flagpole heights in the construction of flag poles along the border. North Korean eventually won by building a pole that is considered the third largest in the world today!
