Most dogs don’t have wonderful smelling breath. Then again who could blame them, not surprisingly, your breath would smell too if you never brushed your teeth!

Taking proper care of your dogs teeth is great to get rid of bad dog breath, and, according to a recent study, it may also help keep your dog healthy and long lived.

Done at Purdue University by Dr. Larry Glickman the study included the records of over 100,000 dogs. This study included a group that had periodontal disease and an equal size group that did not. It was discovered that there is a statistical link between dogs with gum disease and dogs with heart disease.

This was especially true when it came to heart valve inflammation (endocarditis). It was noticed that 0.01 percent of dogs with NO periodontal disease had heart valve inflammation where 0.15 percent of those that had gum disease eventually got heart valve inflammation.

So, you see it’s critical to care for your dogs teeth to be able to keep your pet happy and healthy.

So, just how do you give good dental care to your dog?

Needless to say, dog teeth cleaning is at the core of a great dental care program. You want to attempt to brush your dogs teeth each night with dog toothpaste and a dog toothbrush. It’s good to get in the habit of brushing daily. Daily brushing will help in lowering tartar buildup and stave off gum disease.

You also should speak to your vet about scheduling a dental scaling. This is much like a cleaning you get at the dentist and involves scraping or scaling the tarter from your dogs teeth..

You should also incorporate some specific treats into your canine dental regimen. Some of the chew toys like Nylabones are made particularly to aid in scraping off tarter while your dog is gnawing on them. Other treats can help with dog breath, notably the Greenies which are made for good canine dental health.

Your dogs ongoing good health depends on good dental care. Surplus tarter and plaque can cause bacteria to be present in your dogs system and this can lead to disease in any major organ.

Great dog dental care can help keep your pet healthy. It only requires a couple of minutes each day to brush Fido’s pearly whites and the reward is usually good smelling dog breath and more healthy years added to your pets life.
