Helping Out Your Attention Seeking Dog
A new puppy that barks to much can be very annoying, especially if you are a novice dog owner. It can be irritating, really…I mean you’re exhausted and need sleep but then the puppy barks and is so noisy. This is natural for puppies who were separated from their litter for the first time. But it can be a habit if you mishandle them.
One of the biggest phases a puppy goes through is the fear of being alone. And being alone can mean just you leaving the room for a split second. They can’t bear to be alone because they are used to having their mommy or litter mates around non-stop. Puppies are inherently social animals!
How will u assure your puppy of your love then? If you caress him each time he cries would have a big tendency of making him a spoiled puppy. Ignoring him too much would also aggravate him.
It’s a tough situation to negotiate, but here are some tips to help you.
Don’t yell at your puppy, it might scare him and you will have difficulty winning his affection and loyalty. This negative feeling will cause more ‘crying and yapping’. He is just a puppy, an animal who knows nothing about our language.
Get him many toys or get him a teaching lead. This will at least make him around whenever you are at home. He will feel secure to be with you.
3. When going out, try to refrain from long, drawn out departures. In other words, cut the “long goodbyes.” Petting your puppy and talking sweet to her before leaving the house only creates more stress because she will start to associate such behavior with you leaving her side. The same goes for when you arrive home. Avoid big, exciting welcomes after walking through the door. Ideally, enter stealthily and silently- you know, the way teenagers do when they sneak out after hours.
4. Put a few pennies in a small tin can. When you go to leave your dog’s side and she starts barking, simply throw the can in her area. It will create a startling noise while at the same time diverting her attention. It’s a great, quick solution and it only costs a few pennies!
